HANDLETTERINGGggggg g by MyNameIsMad HANDLETTERINGGggggg g by MyNameIsMad
Idk a lot of people asked me about hand lettering in my last tutorial, so I thought I'd throw this together super quick :U

SOMETHING I DON'T MENTION IN THE TUTORIAL:
THE AMES LETTERING GUIDE

If you can find one of these, good for you. It's the industry standard for getting consistent hand lettering, but I myself haven't had much success with it. I like to think I can keep my letters pretty even by myself. BUT YOU SHOULD PROBABLY TRY THE GUIDE OUT FOR THE SAKE OF IT, IF YOU'RE THINKING OF DOING HAND LETTERING IN ERNEST.

This is super useful! Thanks for doing this. I've used the Ames Lettering Guide before but it takes forever if you aren't used it. ::shrugs:: Live and learn, I guess.

The examples you give are really informative and easy to understand. Thanks!!!

This is great to refer back to. I started a graphic design class this semester and my teacher is really big on hand lettering. The one thing I keep remembering is the first point "Draw it, don't write it." That's actually super helpful!

And so much easier now that I have a brush pen wheeeeeee

I cannot get back the hours I have spent looking at fonts for projects.

Oh ,there's one things I want to know, and I forgot to ask:

In hand lettering, what is the size of the letters? I mean, points or cemtimeters?
Reply
:icontuesdaynightcompany:
TuesdayNightCompany Featured By Owner Aug 27, 2010
In standard American comics, about 3 1/2 on the Ames Letter Guide (using the lower measuring system, NOT metric.) It's flexible, of course, but that's about standard.

I don't have a hard and fast rule for that...just make them big enough to read but not so big that they'll overwhelm the panel.

Just curious, have you ever read "Understanding Comics" by Scott McCloud? If not, I think you'd definitely get a kick out of it.
